Family Trip

This poem-a-day business definitely competes with my workload, but I’m glad for the competition. Work has been the reigning champ for too long. I don’t expect to get more than a few hours of sleep anymore …

Another poem written mostly on the Light Rail, watching and admiring as three middle-aged moms held their eight combined kids to task en route to the Science Center. Life sneaks up on you.

Maybe we wouldn’t be friends if we’d all met

any other way, but there’s something so nice about being

around other women who … it’s almost like we share

our own language, a secret code learned in-between

wrangling our screaming kids. So much work goes under-

appreciated. Guess who

organizes, sets up, picks up, cleans? What’s scariest is how

there’s no textbook on how to be a Mom. Apart from

what we know they’ve been exposed to, what awful things

are they seeing on TV? At least they can’t

get on the Internet—not yet.

Do you make the lists? Who does

the shopping, the budget

in your house? Does your husband figure

out how much you can

spend, or does he listen

to you? “What would our husbands do

without us?” Sometimes, my daughter won’t eat

breakfast unless it’s Krispy Kreme.

“—and she was upset because her husband took the one she wanted, but then again she didn’t want to say anything, and I was just, ‘Woman, don’t let him choose! If you’re packing the sandwiches, just make two of the ones that you like, or just give him the one you don’t want!’”

“Jeez, you shouldn’t have to take the one you don’t wa—“

“—baby, stop, what are y—, oh, you’re just copying Taylor? Okay, just be caref—“

“—and what I told her, I says, ‘You just haven’t been a Mom long enough!’”

“And then I was like, ‘Oh I didn’t mean to offend you or anything!’ But it’s true. Some things about being a Mom you just have to learn.”
